Father and Sons

As fathers,
As sons,
We take this journey
As fathers we are often lost
As sons we seek direction
And in the end, as fathers
We search our souls and wonder,
Did we do enough?

Fathers and Sons

Will your son retell your father's father's story? Or, will your son find his way through the truth that exists in all families and create his personal path and weave a fabric unbroken that will unfold into an intentional, mindful and beautiful life?

"Fathers and Sons" can be our opportunity to share our experiences and to find effective ways to be fathers and sons.

The painting, Fathers and Sons, depicts the fishing camps at Lake Berry Mountain which is located in the mountains on the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, Canada. In the 1950's, my grandfather Roy Thompson with his three sons would travel the ten hour journey including a ferry across the Bay of Chaleur to fish at Lake Berry Mountain.

The camps were closed and burned in 1994 by the Provincial Government and the land given back to the Mic-Mac Indians.

My parents died in 2006. Since childhood, I had looked at the pictures and movies taken at the lake. Somewhere in this process, I decided that it time that I make that journey to the lake -- with my son. In 2007, I traveled with my son, David, to Lake Berry Mountain. A bridge now spans the gap between New Brunswick and Quebec. The eight mile road access to the lake is nolonger passable. Today one travels twenty five miles on a logging road to the lake. If you didn't know where it was located you would miss the slightly hidden left turn.

The Mic-Macs have created a path around the lake. As I walked this path, I walked with my Dad. Along this walk, I would pause and have the conversations with my Dad that he never had with me. Practice I think so that one day I will have these conversations with my son.
